Peaky Blinders Movie Odds: Gary Oldman And Helen Mirren Set For Cameos

Peaky Blinders thought they had seen the last of Tommy Shelby when the sixth and final series of the epic BBC show ended in 2022 - but a Netflix movie has since been confirmed.

Cillian Murphy will return as Birmingham gangster Shelby for the hotly-anticipated movie, which is written by show creator Steven Knight and directed by Tom Harper, and will go into production later this year.

The storyline is under wraps for now, but several big-name stars have been tipped up on UK betting sites for potential cameos.

Murphy said in June: "It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans."

Shelby was last seen in the season six finale riding off on a white horse to start a new life - but it doesn't look like being a quiet one.

Knight recently said: "I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war."

Saltburn star Barry Keoghan recently joined the cast - which has led to fan speculation he could portray Shelby's son - following in the footsteps of Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson.

For now, it is the just two of them attached and Murphy, but it wouldn't be Peaky Blinders if Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby), Sophie Rundle (Ada Thorne), Natasha O'Keeffe (Lizzie Shelby) and Packy Lee (Johnny Dogs) didn't return for the film.

Anya Taylor-Joy (Gina Gray), Tom Hardy (Alfie Solomons) and Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Esme Shelby-Lee) would also be popular returnees.

The likes of Stephen Graham would have been a good shout for a Peaky movie cameo, but he rocked up in series six as Hayden Stagg and could also return for the motion picture. So, which new stars will make guest appearances?

Oldman Perfect For Peaky

If the six Peaky Blinders series are anything to go by, bosses will pull out all the stops to make the movie a huge success.

One thing we do know about the film is that it's expected to pick up a few years after the end of the BBC show - which was set between 1919-34 - and looks set to put Peaky Blinders into the World War II firing line.

Knight previously told Metro: "I know what the story is and I’m writing at the moment. It’s a very specific story, that’s based on a true story from the Second World War and will be told in the Peaky way."

If Hardy returns for the movie, then he might be able to tempt his Dark Knight Rises co-star Gary Oldman to appear in the project.

Speaking to talkSPORT in 2022, Oldman praised Hardy for his "spectacularly good" performance in Peaky Blinders, so he is clearly a fan of the series.

Statham is no stranger to explosive movies, but this cameo would make sense for other reasons.

The Beekeeper star was originally set to portray Shelby ahead of Murphy, because Knight preferred his physicality.

However, a text from Murphy to Knight, which read: "Remember, I'm an actor," played a huge part in Knight changing his mind - and the rest is history.

Mirren To Make McCrory Nod?

The biggest tragedy amid the six Peaky seasons was the real-life passing of Helen McCrory, who played Tommy Shelby's no-nonsense aunt Polly Gray.

McCrory majestically played Polly in the first five series, but she tragically passed away, aged just 52, before filming on season six commenced.

There will no doubt be nods aplenty to Gray in the movie, and should film bosses be searching for an old friend of Gray's, or perhaps even a past foe, then Dame Helen Mirren could step up to the plate perfectly.

Mirren is 6/5 on betting apps to be among the actresses who make a Peaky movie cameo.

If it comes to fruition, it also wouldn't be the first time Mirren has appeared in a Knight production.

She led the cast of 2014 movie The Hundred-Foot Journey, which Knight wrote.

Others who could be in contention to join the cast include Michelle Keegan (11/8) - who starred in 2024 Netflix hit Fool Me Once - The White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney (13/8), and 2/1 shot Jodie Comer, who has already proved she can turn her hand to just about any role.

By Order Of The Peaky Blinders

If Knight is looking closer to home for another Peaky cameo then he could call upon Olivia Colman.

The British acting legend is just 5/2 on new betting sites to star in the movie, and the screenwriter knows her well.

Colman was fantastic as Miss Havisham in Knight's 2023 TV adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.

Another star known to Knight is legendary actor Timothy Spall.

The Harry Potter star appeared in 2021 Princess Diana drama movie Spencer, which was penned by Knight, and he is 2/1 to reunite with the Peaky Blinders writer on the forthcoming Netflix film.

What's more, Vinnie Jones (5/2) is no stranger to donning tweed and a flat cap thanks to his role in Guy Ritchie's Netflix hit The Gentlemen, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see him do so again by taking part in another of the streaming giant's big projects.

While Jones would no doubt play a British character if he got the call, Knight could also look across the pond for potential cameos.

Anya Taylor-Joy expertly portrays scheming American character Gina Gray in the TV series, and if she reprises her role, it could lead to more US actors taking part in the film.

If so, 5/1 chance Jake Gyllenhaal could be on bosses' wanted list.

He was set to appear in movie Rio, which was written by Knight, but that is yet to materialise.

Gyllenhaal also appeared alongside MMA star Conor McGregor in recent movie Road House, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if the 6/1 Irishman rocked up in Peaky next.

Like Gyllenhaal, singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter is another US star who has a connection to the upcoming project.

Carpenter is dating Keoghan, one of three stars confirmed for the movie, and she is 7/1 to land a cameo, while fellow US actor Channing Tatum is 8/1
