13:35 Ascot – Rebel Territory – 1pt @ 5/1
Rebel Territory was on the up last season, winning a good handicap at Newmarket before bolting up over C&D in the Victoria Cup. Unfortunately for his connections, he didn’t race again until returning a couple of weeks ago and it’ll be interesting to see whether he can progress again.
His comeback run at Goodwood was a solid effort, one he should improve on. He was plenty keen enough in the race and, after travelling well, he couldn’t pick up as well as looked likely. Fitness shouldn’t be a problem now and he may have more to offer in these 7f handicaps.
14:10 Ascot – Imperial Sovereign – 1pt @ 20/1
Imperial Sovereign hasn’t had things easy on the turf, running in the Lingfield Derby Trial, the Queen’s Vase and then the Melrose. None of those efforts would scream he’s waiting to win from a mark of 97, but I have a suspicion that he can if a first-time visor helps.
He made good headway coming into the straight at York last time, but then hit the wall and weakened. Dropping in trip may help, especially on an easier surface, and it’s worth taking a chance on him at 20/1. He definitely has more ability than his form figures of late suggest.
17:05 Ascot – The Big Board – 1pt @ 12/1
The Big Board got close to a triple-figured rating last term and hasn’t got near to reaching those heights again. She likely never will, but is down in the low 80s now and almost won off 81 on her penultimate start when returned to this C&D, going down by a short-head.
That looked like a false dawn after her performance at Newbury since, although it was an odd race in which they went very fast early before finishing slowly. I’m inclined to forgive that effort altogether and, on a slower surface at her ideal C&D, she can return to form again.
