There will be a new name on the Wimbledon honours board come Saturday evening after one of the most unlikely women’s singles finals in recent history between Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini.
Coming into SW19, Paolini had never won a tour-level match on grass, let alone at the All England Club, where she was 0-3.
Krejcikova had, at least, tasted success on the surface as a two-time women’s doubles champion at Wimbledon, but arrived off the back of a torrid build-up.
Now the pair are just one win away from lifting the Rosewater Dish after remarkable runs, consistently upsetting the odds along the way.
Given the number of upsets we’ve seen, Krejcikova being the favourite on betting sites for the final could prove a bad omen.
The Czech is 8/11 to win her second grand slam title having won the French Open in 2021, with Paolini 5/4 to land her first major championship.

The rise of Paolini as a force in women’s tennis has been one of the stories of the year.
At 28-year-old’s, it looked like we’d seen the best of the Italian, who came into the year having never previously been beyond the second round of a slam.
But a run to the fourth round in Australia, followed by victory at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai were warnings of what was to come.
She broke out at the French Open, plotting a route to the final, where she was beaten by Iga Swiatek. Given her record on grass, a similar run at Wimbledon looked very unlikely.
Instead, she has become only the fifth woman to reach the final of the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.
The world number seven has played some spectacular tennis along the way, her explosive and aggressive style of play winning plenty of admirers along the way.
She demolished Emma Navarro in the quarter-finals before engaging in the longest women’s semi-final in Wimbledon history against Donna Vekic, edging an instant classic in a final set tie-break.
How much that match took out of Paolini is the biggest question mark hanging over the Italian, who has shown she can handle the big occasion.
But it’s not like Krejcikova had an easy ride to get here, the world number 32 recovering from a set down in her semi-final against Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina was the overwhelming favourite on tennis betting sites for that clash, but Krejcikova defied the odds, producing a brilliant range of shots to knock out the Kazakh.
Having upset Jelena Ostapenko in the previous round, Krejcikova has certainly earned her place in the final and throughout her career, the Czech has shown that when she gets on a roll she can be tough to stop.
After struggling with injury and illness for much of the year, the 28-year-old has rediscovered her form at Wimbledon and is within touching distance of an eighth singles title.
It’s not an easy final to call with Krejcikova having the edge in experience and freshness, but not enough to justify backing her at odds-on.
More powerful opponents have exposed Paolini slightly, but Krejcikova doesn’t quite fit that bill, and this sets up a final where a strong all-court game will be needed.
The value in the match market for this one lies with Paolini, who has won more grand slam matches (15) than anyone else this year and is playing with an air of confidence that suggests she can become the first Italian to ever win Wimbledon.

Krejcikova vs Paolini Tips: Krejcikova Serve A Weapon
We saw Vekic keep Paolini at bay with her serve in their semi-final clash, the Croat winning 83% of first-serve points and sending down seven aces.
Madison Keys also troubled Paolini with her service game in the fourth round and while Krejcikova lacks the power of those two, her variety on serve has given previous opponents problems.
She’s served up 20 aces in total at these championships, the majority of which have come in the later rounds, serving up five each against Danielle Collins and Ostapenko, and four in the semi-final with Rybakina.
Paolini has proven herself to be a very adept returner and Krejcikova will know that the longer the points go on, the more it favours Paolini.
Therefore, she will likely concentrate on shortening points and focusing on her serve, making the over/under line for Krejcikova aces look a little low.
