14:10 Chelmsford – Rhubarb Bikini – 1pt @ 4/1

Rhubarb Bikini was a major disappointment when I backed him at Lingfield last time out but his six runs in handicaps at that venue have now yielded five last place finishes. The one time he wasn’t last, he came fourth of five runners and beat that one horse by a head! For some reason, he doesn’t seem to act there and I perhaps should have been able to spot that problem before his latest outing.

He is of questionable character regardless and does not always apply himself no matter where he’s running, but Chelmsford brings out a brighter side on occasion. Twelve runs here have led to a couple of wins, three seconds and a third. That’s much more like it and his form at other tracks means he’s back here for the first time in five outings running off a 10lb lower mark than his last attempt.

That came over 1m 2f, which does stretch his stamina, and he’s 15lbs lower than his last run here at a mile. He was third then, beaten little more than a length, and a similar performance from a ratings point of view would see him winning this easily. He won’t make anything look easy, such is his way, but he could get a solo on the front end and prove tough to catch, assuming he’s in form.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

15:20 Chelmsford – Revolutionise – 1pt @ 2/1

Revolutionise doesn’t take too much explaining! He’s a bang in-form performer who is still on a good mark based on his historical form and he didn’t get the best of luck in-running when third at Wolverhampton a few weeks ago, denied a clear run through at a vital stage. He finished with something left in the tank and did very well to come home so strongly after losing momentum.

Had he got the run through that Titan Rock did, he would have been the winner and getting to race off the same mark again makes his chance look very obvious. Granted, this is a different track and surface but he’s a two-time C&D winner so that won’t be a problem. Marco Ghiani knows him well and although this is a competitive little race, if the horse performs to his best then he’ll be hard to beat.

15:55 Chelmsford – Social City – 1pt @ 9/1

Social City will get one more chance before I park him up. This will be my third time backing him since he returned from a break in December and although his finishing effort left something to be desired most recently, it wasn’t a bad performance. He was only a few lengths off the leader at the line and had made a big move coming into the straight, which burned off any of his spare petrol.

The winner cut across him over a furlong from home as well and I think there are a couple of reasons to suggest he’s better than the bare figure achieved. I like the booking of Rossa Ryan, who is a definite jockey uplift, and he has won over C&D in times gone by. He needs to improve, and hasn’t won for an age, but he’s on a rating he will exploit at some point when the stars align for him. Hopefully today!

17:30 Southwell – Birkenhead – 1pt @ 12/1

Birkenhead may take another run to be at his peak fitness but I thought there were enough hints in his C&D comeback run four weeks ago to suggest that he’s of interest at this level. He contested a competitive 0-75 and after an early bump, he was sitting further back in the field than usual. That track position was enough to ensure he had no chance of winning and his rider wasn’t overly hard on him.

I’d guess that he was expected to need the outing regardless and if circumstance allowed, he could have been at least a couple of lengths closer. He’s back in a 0-65 now, his trainer has had almost a month to sharpen him up and this looks like the right sort of race. Many of those at single-figures are hard to trust and this fellow does like it here, with six course runs leading to a win and two seconds.

 18:30 Southwell – Plastic Paddy – 1pt @ 11/1

Plastic Paddy is yet to win here but his three C&D performances have all been very good and the latest one led to a one-length third to Tropez Power, who progressed nicely since joining up with John Quinn. Neither outing since has been at that level but they were over 7f and given all five of his career wins have been at a mile, I’m inclined to forgive and forget on account of the trip simply being too short for him.

How much margin for error he has off his current rating is a question worth asking and I don’t really know the answer, but plenty of the others have risks attached. Kingmania has never run on the All-Weather and has to prove herself at a mile, Francesi drops in trip off a mark that looks high enough, Athmad has been busy and turns out within just seven days of his last run, and Dubai Jeanius needs further.

They are all of the runners at single-figured odds so regardless of how things pan out, I’m happy to take a look at something further down the betting. Plastic Paddy has already been supported so I’m not the only one thinking along similar lines and if he puts his best foot forward now upped to his optimal trip again, he’ll hit the frame at worst. There’s still a bit of juice in the 10/1+ quotes on offer.
