Lee Carsley’s first game in interim charge of England got off to a winning start on Saturday and betting sites now make him odds-on to fill the vacancy on a permanent basis.

Carsley was named caretaker manager following Gareth Southgate’s decision to stand down after the Three Lions’ European Championship final defeat to Spain.

The FA had been hoping to have a new man in place before the Nations League double header against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, but the organisation is determined to make the right choice and appointed Carsley in the meantime.

The Three Lions could not have made a better start under the temporary regime as goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish secured a 2-0 victory in Dublin.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter had been vying for favouritism for many weeks only for the market to swing dramatically in favour of Carsley, who currently leads the way.

Will the FA decide Carsley is the right man to lead the Three Lions into the next World Cup?

Here, we look at the candidates and the latest next England manager odds.

Carsley In The Driving Seat

Carsley has been in the conversation as a contender since Southgate announced his decision to stand down in mid-July and and is now well clear of the field with new betting sites following an impressive start to his regime at the Aviva Stadium.

Southgate enjoyed great success with England, but despite steering the international team to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, he was criticised by some fans for being too defensive.

Supporters were given a glimpse of what the future could look like as the handbrake came off in a positive start under the England Under-21 coach.

It should not be forgotten that Southgate was also been in charge of the U21s when he answered his country's call in September 2016 following the exit of Sam Allardyce.

Carsley's odds were 12/1 following England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, but he is now the 8/11 favourite with William Hill to take a similar route by being promoted to the senior side on a permanent basis.

Howe Second Favourite

Eddie Howe’s odds have been up and down over the last month, but the Newcastle boss is now the second favourite at 6/1.

On a pre-season tour to Japan, Howe denied the Football Association had been in touch about the vacancy and also took the opportunity to pledge his immediate future to the Magpies.

He said: “Absolutely no contact whatsoever from everybody – and I’m fully committed to Newcastle.”

Newcastle will not want to lose Howe, who guided the Magpies back to the Champions League after a 20-year absence.

A compensation package would be needed to lure Howe away from St James' Park, assuming he wants the job right now in his career.

Howe is the type of coach who would probably miss the day-to-day contact with his players that the international game does not provide and there is also a big question mark over whether the FA could afford him.

Potter Still In The Frame

Graham Potter has been near the top of the betting market to be England's next manager for the last few months.

Potter's last job was as Chelsea manager, but his tenure only lasted 31 games, during which time he won 12 times.

His dismissal undid some of the good work he did at Swansea and Brighton, which gave him the opportunity to manage the Stamford Bridge club.

If the Football Association wants Potter and the feeling is reciprocated, then it should be a straightforward process.

After 16 months out of work, Potter is 8/1 to be named England's next permanent manager.

Guardiola Fourth Favourite

Pep Guardiola has won everything at Manchester City and sooner or later the time will come for him to move on.

Guardiola’s contract at Manchester City expires at the end of the 2024/25 season and he is unlikely to leave his position before then.

City, of course, were charged in February 2023 with breaching 115 Premier League regulations and an independent regulatory committee is reportedly soon set to hear the case against the club.

If they are found guilty, it could result in City being relegated, although Guardiola's contract would already have come to an end by then.

However, because of the uncertainty surrounding City, Guardiola's odds dropped dramatically from 25/1 to 4/1 with football betting sites over the past few weeks, but he has since drifted to 10/1.

The big question is whether the City boss would be interested in the Three Lions job and whether he would miss the day-to-day involvement of being a club manager?

Klopp Odds Lengthen

Jurgen Klopp waved goodbye to Liverpool after nine seasons on Merseyside and the question is what will be the next move for the German?

The England job seemed to be ideal for Klopp who admitted he didn't have the energy to continue managing the Reds.

The German had vowed he would never manage another Premier League club, which kept the door open for a possible venture into international management.

However, speaking at the International Coaches’ Congress in Wurzburg, Germany, Klopp ruled out becoming the next Three Lions boss.

When asked whether he had received any offers, he said: “At the moment, there is nothing at all in terms of jobs. No club, no country.

“England? That would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if I said I’ll make an exception for you.”

Klopp's odds have since drifted from 10/1 to 14/1 with Bet365.

Lampard And McKenna Dark Horses

Frank Lampard spent much of the Euros watching England in his role as a pundit for the BBC. Will it give him the urge to manage his country?

Like Southgate, Lampard, who is out to 33/1 with football betting sites, would be another former Three Lions player to take control of the team.

Lampard's last managerial job was at his former club Chelsea, but it didn't go particularly well as the Blues won just one of his 11 games in charge at the end of the 2022/23 season.

The 46-year-old is qualified to manage his country, but it might be too early in his career right now.

Kieran McKenna's reputation has been enhanced by leading Ipswich from League One to the Premier League in back-to-back seasons and he is also 33/1 for the England job.

The Northern Irishman has also been linked with the Manchester United job, but is still seeking his first win in charge of the Tractor Boys in their first season in the top flight since the 2001/02 campaign.

As well as he has done in the last couple of seasons, the odds suggest it's too soon for McKenna to be considered for the Three Lions role.

Pochettino Out Of The Picture

Mauricio Pochettino was 10/1 with betting apps recently, but he is likely to be appointed USA coach soon and has drifted to 40/1 with Ladbrokes.

Pochettino only spent one season at Chelsea, but a strong end to the campaign saw the Blues finish in sixth spot.

The popular Argentinian has experience of coaching in high-pressured environments, such as at Paris St-Germain, and he steered Tottenham to the Champions League final five years ago.

Pochettino has a reputation for playing attacking football which was of the main criticisms of Southgate, whose reluctance to make changes at crucial moments frustrated England supporters.

However, Pochettino is almost certainly heading elsewhere and is one to avoid from a betting perspective.

Tuchel Ready To Rebuild His Career

Thomas Tuchel was hoping to rebuild his managerial career at Bayern Munich, but it didn't exactly pan out the way the German would have liked.

Tuchel did steer Bayern to their 11th successive title in 2023, but he was only in charge for the final nine league games. He was also in charge for their exits from the German Cup and Champions League that season too.

Last season was a disaster for Bayern and Tuchel in particular as the Bavarian club finished trophyless for the first time in 12 seasons.

The Sun reported in July that Tuchel would be keen to replace Southgate, but his odds have since drifted from 25/1 to 50/1.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is also 50/1, but he is riding the crest of a wave in Spain and is unlikely to contemplate international management just yet.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, and ex-Everton boss Rafa Benitez are all 66/1.
