French Open Prediction: Slow Start May Not Hurt Semi-Final Hopefuls
It was Alexander Zverev's turn to entertain the Parisian night owls on Monday evening/Tuesday morning as his five-set thriller against Holger Rune ran until 1.40am local time.
The German’s last two matches have gone the distance and he’s arguably had the toughest run of any male competitor to reach this point having opened up against Rafael Nadal.
The Rome Masters champion has done well to improve his record at Roland Garros to 30-6, an impressive record for a player who’s not gone beyond the semi-finals of this event.
He faces the dangerous Alex De Minaur on Wednesday. The Australian is enjoying his best-ever run at the French Open and has a new-found confidence on clay.
Daniil Medvedev says his best was not good enough to overcome De Minaur in their fourth-round encounter and the 11th seed looks more than capable of running Zverev close.
Picking a winner in this one isn’t easy. Both men have shown mental toughness to come from behind to win their last two matches, but therein may lie an intriguing bet for this encounter.
Both Zverev and De Minaur have dropped the opening set in each of their last two matches but gone on to win.
Combine that with the stat that three of the previous five meetings between the pair have been won by the player that lost the opening set, including two matches this year, and you have an interesting pattern.

The Panel can't see past Rybakina and Sabalenka advancing to the semi-finals in the women’s singles.
Sabalenka is odds-on to win in straight sets against an opponent she’s never dropped a set to in three previous meetings and the Belarusian is expected to make light work of Andreeva. However, with little to like about the prices on betting apps for this match, it's a pass.
Rybakina’s last-eight encounter may not be as straightforward, given she’s been paired with Paolini. The Italian is enjoying a great season and while she’s been a little inconsistent at times in matches at Roland Garros, when it’s clicked, Paolini’s aggressive approach has seen her overwhelm opponents.
Rybakina is a different level of opponent than Paolini has faced so far in Paris, the Kazakh having advanced to only her second French Open quarter-final without dropping a set.
She also holds two previous victories on clay over Paolini, including a win in Stuttgart in April. Rybakina needed three sets to beat the diminutive 12th seed that day and she may need to win more than 12 games to advance here.
