The opening round of fixtures to start the 2024/25 Championship season concludes with Burnley's trip to Luton Town.

This was a Premier League fixture last season and both clubs will hope that their stay in the second tier will be a short one. 

While Luton manager Rob Edwards has stayed to help get the Hatters back in the top flight, Burnley are beginning life under Scott Parker, who replaced Vincent Kompany following his shock appointment as Bayern Munich manager earlier this summer.

Goals For Both Sides On Opening Night

Despite last season’s relegation, both teams are expected to be in the mix at the end of the campaign, with Burnley 13/2 second favourites on betting apps for the title and Luton a best-priced 10/1 with BetVictor.

The Hatters are 29/20 favourites to get off to a winning start having kept the bulk of their squad, but Ross Barkley joined Aston Villa in the summer and fellow midfielder Albert Sambo Lokonga moved to Sevilla on loan from Arsenal.

Although manager Edwards brought in Shandon Baptiste on a free transfer from Brentford, this Luton team look slightly inferior to the one that caused some major surprises in the Premier League.

The Clarets have also retained many of their players from last season, but Parker has made a few additions, including goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky from Ipswich, who signed Arijanet Muric in a swap deal.

Brazilian left-back Lucas Pires has replaced Charlie Taylor following his move to Southampton and it still remains to be seen what will happen to Wout Weghorst.

In general though, both teams look strong and it should be anther close affair just like last season’s top-flight encounters.

Jacob Bruun Larsen scored an 85th-minute winner in a 2-1 Burnley victory at Kenilworth Road and the return fixture ended in a a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

With that in mind, both teams to score and under 3.5 goals at 19/10 with Bet365 looks a decent prospect.

Foster To Hurt The Hatters Again

With Luton’s defence severely depleted, Burnley forward Lyle Foster will be eager to make his mark in his first appearance of the season.

Although the South African netted five just five goals last season as Burnley suffered relegation, his shooting accuracy was impressive. Foster took 34 shots in the top flight last term, with 16 of those on target - an accuracy rate of 47.1%.

With that in mind, he should find plenty of opportunities against Luton's makeshift back four as he aims to help his team secure an opening-day victory.

After taking a break from the game last year, Foster finished the season strongly and could benefit from the drop to the Championship having grabbed a fine goal in the club's 1-1 draw against Cadiz in pre-season last week.

Given Luton’s defensive shortages, Foster’s speed and clever movement could be crucial and his confidence will be high after scoring against the Spanish side.

More Late Drama At The Kenny

If the opening weekend of the new Championship season has taught us anything, it's to be prepared for late goals.

A total of 35 goals were scored in the 11 matches played so far, and 13 of those (37.1%), came in the 76th minute or later.
