US Open Golf Betting Tips: Three Panel Picks For Tough Pinehurst Test

Pinehurst No. 2 is the venue for this week’s US Open and it’s no surprise to see that Scottie Scheffler heads the field with betting sites after winning his fifth tournament of the year at the weekend.

The world number one rolled in a five-footer for par to win the Memorial Tournament by one shot from Collin Morikawa, who is one of the favourites at 16/1 with BetVictor to add a third major title to his name.

Two of our three selections from Muirfield last week proved profitable as Sepp Straka’s chip-in at the last ensured a three-way tie for fifth at 66/1 at odds of 8.8/1 for six places, while Billy Horschel delivered a top 20 spot at 13/8.

Hopefully, we'll have more success for the third major of the year which promises to be a brutal affair at this tough par-70 course which hosted the 2014 US Open.

Our golf experts on The Panel have gathered round the table to discuss the merits of the world’s best players and picked out three US Open golf betting tips for what should be a thrilling four days in North Carolina.

US Open Golf Betting Predictions:

Hot Scheffler The Man To Beat At Pinehurst

Martin Kaymer delivered a wire-to-wire eight-stroke victory at this course to win the US Open 10 years ago just a few weeks after claiming The Players Championship.

Punters looking for omens will remember that Scheffler won at Sawgrass in March, so it seems that the stars are aligning for the American to add the US Open to his second Masters title from a couple of months ago.

Scheffler’s worst finish in his last eight outings was eighth at the USPGA Championship when he spent Friday morning in jail wondering if he would even get to play his second round.

Five victories and two runners-up spots at the Houston Open and Charles Schwab Challenge during the same period is the kind of form Tiger Woods produced in his pomp, so it’s little wonder Scheffler is streets ahead of his rivals with golf betting sites.

Incredibly, Scheffler is more than a shot better than any other player in the Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green stats this year which should prove a bonus when trying to hit the fast, dome-like surfaces described as “upside down cereal bowls” by one Golf Channel presenter.

The key to success this week seems to be missing in the right areas and giving yourself a chance for an up and down on these extremely challenging greens.

Kaymer’s successful use of the putter from off the greens played a major part in his 2014 triumph and it will be interesting to see how the players approach those shots 10 years later, especially with all the divots they have to negotiate in the run-off areas

PGA Tour player Johnson Wagner said Scheffler, who is playing alongside Rory McIlroy (12/1) and USPGA champion Xander Schauffele (11/1) for the first two days, made those shots look effortless during his practice rounds which is an encouraging sign for what lies ahead this week.

With a 62.5% success rate since March, Scheffler to win at 10/3 with Unibet is the first of this week’s US Open betting tips.

Matsuyama Primed For Top 20 Smash Hit

Hideki Matsuyama shot a closing 70 to finish in the top 10 at Muirfield and all the signs point towards another strong performance from the Japanese star.

Matsuyama posted a couple of mid-division finishes at the Masters and USPGA in the last couple of months, but his major record generally is highly impressive, especially in the United States.

In 36 major appearances on American soil, Matsuyama has missed the cut just twice and he has three top 10s overall at the US Open, the best being his runner-up spot to Brooks Koepka at Erin Hills seven years ago.

In 2022, he saved his best round until last with a tournament-low 65 to finish outright fourth at Brookline, just three shots behind winner Matt Fitzpatrick.

What draws us towards Matsuyama is the fact he leads the Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green metrics and is sixth for scrambling – skills which he and the rest of the field will definitely need this week.

For the adventurous among you, Matsuyama looks a livewire at 9/2 with BetMGM for a fourth top-10 finish at this major tournament, but we’re taking the safer option of a top 20 at 15/8 with Bet365 as the next of our US Open betting tips.

Tommy Gunning For Maiden Major Success

Players who hit it straight this week should thrive and there aren’t many players who hit more fairways than Tommy Fleetwood, who is still seeking a maiden major.

The 33-year-old from Southport is third for driving accuracy in 2024 and more importantly he is developing a taste for the cut and thrust of major tournaments.

Fleetwood has five top 10s in his last nine majors, including third at the US Masters in April, and he was fifth at the US Open held at the Los Angeles Country Club 12 months ago.

That ended a barren run at the US Open at which he had finished fourth and second in 2017 and 2018.

Fleetwood continues to hit the frame and although he looks tempting at 15/4 with betting apps for another top 10, it may perhaps pay dividends to set your sights slightly lower bearing in mind he has not achieved that feat in his last five outings on the PGA Tour.

He has though finished in the top 20 in four of his last seven tournaments, so we’ll take the 6/4 Fleetwood improving that total at a course where hitting fairways and scrambling well will be paramount.

Fleetwood is 17th for SG: Around-the-Green and 10th for scrambling in 2024, statistics which are hard to ignore this week.
