Orange Bowl 2022 Betting Guide
The 2022 Orange Bowl features what, on paper, looks like a high-powered college football bowl game.
However, the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (10-2) and No. 10 Clemson Tigers (11-2) are both dealing with uncertainties. We’ll discuss what’s hampering with these teams in the following Orange Bowl 2022 betting guide. The Orange Bowl will once again take place at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. If you’ll be wagering at the best sports betting sites, note that kickoff time is 8 p.m. ET on December 30. You can see the rest of the details on this popular college football bowl game below.
Betting on Tennessee at the NCAA Orange Bowl
The Tennessee Volunteers had a hot start to the season after winning their first eight games. This win streak included a victory over then-No. 1 Alabama in a 52-49 thriller. The Vols finally lost their first contest three games later against now-No. 1 Georgia. It also suffered a surprising blowout 63-38 loss to No. 20 South Carolina.
Of course, the Volunteers had an excuse in that debacle after losing Heisman candidate Hendon Hooker to an ACL tear. The 6-foot-4 senior QB was having a marvelous season with 3,325 passing yards, 27 passing TDs, and two interceptions. He helped power Tennessee to 45.7 points per game — good for first in the nation right now.
Joe Milton has been a capable backup-turned-starter with seven touchdowns and 720 passing yards. But he’ll be without WR Jalin Hyatt, who has declared for the NFL Draft. Hyatt is a huge loss after catching 67 balls for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The rushing game is a dual-headed attack with Jaylen Wright and Jabari Small. The two tailbacks have combined for 1,482 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns this season.
Tennessee’s main weakness is their pass defense, which is surrendering 284 yards per game (125th nationally). The defense does a much better job against the run, holding opposing teams to 115.5 yards (21st nationally).
Betting on Clemson at the Orange Bowl
The Clemson Tigers have a similar story to the Vols. This team also won its first eight games, including a victory over a strong Florida State team. Its first loss came on the road to Notre Dame by a score of 35-14. Like Tennessee, Clemson also lost to South Carolina — albeit in a much-closer 31-30 contest. It did win every ACC game, though, and most recently defeated North Carolina 39-10 to become conference champions.
Despite being ACC champs, the Tigers come into this college football bowl game with quarterback questions. D.J. Uiagalelei started off well and helped guide this squad to the 8-0 start. However, he faltered down the stretch and was benched in favor of Cade Klubnik.
The freshman Klubnik engineered the blowout win against North Carolina and will start in the Orange Bowl. It’ll be interesting to see how he does in his first collegiate start. Uiagalelei, meanwhile, has entered the transfer portal and is no longer a Tiger.
This school favors its ground game on offense. Led by Will Shipley’s 1,110 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, it runs for 182.2 yards per game (43rd nationally). Of course, Clemson will face a big challenge against Tennessee’s stout rush defense.
The Tigers are good — if not great — at stopping the run themselves. They’ve held opponents to 100.9 yards on the ground (8th nationally). The pass defense, in contrast, is subpar and surrenders 227.8 yards (68th) through the air.
Who won the Orange Bowl in the Past
Clemson is going for its third NCAA Orange Bowl title within the past decade. As seen below, it won in January 2014 and December 2015. Can it win one of the biggest NCAAF bowl games a third time?

Orange Bowl Predictions: Moneyline Betting Pick (Clemson -250)
The Orange Bowl 2022 teams have had comparable seasons in many aspects. But we think that Clemson will separate itself from Tennessee in this game. Its player losses going into the Orange Bowl aren’t as notable as the Volunteers’ Hooker and Hyatt. We see the Tennessee vs. Clemson matchup being a close one that goes in the Tigers’ favor.
Orange Bowl Projections: Point Spread Betting Pick (Tennessee +6.5)
The Vols are 9-3 against the spread (ATS) this season, while Clemson is 7-6. Tennessee has covered in six of its last eight games, versus Clemson’s 3-3 ATS record down the stretch. The Volunteers may very well lose this matchup, but they’ll make it close in doing so.
Orange Bowl Over/Under Betting Pick (Over 65.5)
The Tigers and Vols are both starting backup quarterbacks in the Orange Bowl 2022. Tennessee is dealing with the additional loss of star wideout Jalin Hyatt to the NFL Draft. Nevertheless, we can’t see these two teams failing to go over 65.5 points. The Volunteers are especially potent — even without Hooker — averaging 43.3 points per game within the last four contests.
